Valentine s Day
Valentine’s Day arrives on February 14th each year that's today! It’s a customary time to cast some love spells, brew love potions, and divine for future mates. There is so much intense romantic energy associated with this special day that it is believed to be the perfect time for practitioners of magic to buy or make magical tools to use in the spells of love.
The roots of this day of romance can be traced back to the times of ancient Rome. It was originally celebrated on the ides of February as a fertility rite. This Valentine’s Day was celebrated when the young men of the village or town would choose their sex partners for the rest of that year by writing down the names of young female virgins on small pieces of paper. These were called billets and were drawn from a box at random. This ritual was dedicated to the god Lupercus and was known as the Lupercalia.

Because the early church wanted to get rid of Paganism, they banished this festival. However, they realized that the Romans were quite attached to their games so they kept the lottery system. They thought they were being so sneaky on Valentine’s Day by replacing the names of the potential sex partners with the names of Christian saints. Instead of young men choosing their sex partners, they would have the honor of living the life of their chosen saint for a year.
Saint Lupercus was also replaced with Saint Valentine. This was a possibly mythical martyr who was eventually made the patron saint of lovers. Saint Valentine was among many male love deities who were called upon by people who practiced magic in the Middle Ages.

Valentine’s Day was also surrounded by many superstitions. It was once believed that the first person of the opposite sex that a single person met accidently on this day would be the person they would marry. Another one involves a young woman going out at sunrise on this day. If the first person she met was a man, the two of them would be married within 3 months. There are still a lot of people who believe that February 13th, or Valentine’s Eve, is a lucky day to get married. However, it is considered unlucky to cancel engagements, weddings, or dates on Valentine’s Day.
It’s still thought to be a lot of fun to purchase love potions and love spells in order to draw the one you love to you, or simply enhance any romantic plans you have for this special evening. With the right spell and the right color of candles, your night can be a truly exciting one.
Whatever you believe about this day of lovers, do everything you can to make it especially romantic. Remember, if it doesn’t work out the way you want, there’s always next year.
